Message Board or Valance?

I recently posted here about my new message board at the kitchen desk area.

I had some leftover fabric from the project that I thought
would be great for a valance to soften the kitchen window that
is currently just covered with a woven shade.

I started with just a rod pocket treatment because I was
still trying to figure out how I wanted to finish the hem.

I decided I wanted the "look" of a pleated shade but my sewing expertise is not
quite up for it, so I improvised by folding some pleats in the fabric
and sewing across ALL of them to hold the pleats in place.

The brown ties are made from leftover fabric from a tablecloth from Target.
The tablecloth was bought originally for a drapery project that I posted about here.

Here's a peek at the finished product.

  2. Oh that looks so great! I absolutely love the fabric and that now it is carried throughout your kitchen by doing it in 2 separate spaces! That is such a great way to do a "faux" roman shade. I did something a little bit similar in our playroom I showed the other day. These kind of treatments are about the extent of my sewing skills too! :-) Thanks so much for joining the party this week!

  4. These turned out so pretty. No one will know they're faux. I really like the fabric and your wall color.

  7. Great job on the curtain. I don't like cords either, so this was a great solution.

  8. Ooh la lah! I loved that paisley print on your message board (aka cord camoflauge), but it's even prettier as a window treatment ~ especially layered over the other teXtured shade. I've been wanting to update the boring gathered valance in my kitchen. This fauX roman project looks like just the thing for my novice sewing skills. ThanX for the inspiration, Petie!
