I came across several books that I liked for their size, age, color, and, of course, interesting content! I enjoy a good book, but these were going to be used mainly for decorative purposes, and they were 50% off!
I was struck when I opened a couple of them by the sentimental writing in the covers. How sweet!
And, the age of some of these books. 1934!
I'm not sure I could just leave a book, or anything else for that matter, that had a direct note written to me in it....even if it just says "to" and "from". I would probably have to cover the note somehow. I have a hard time taking my kids old sports uniforms to the Goodwill because our last name is usually on it.
I feel kind of lucky to have these books. The original recipient must have meant a lot to the "giver" of the books for them to have taken the time to address a note.
Hope your week is off to a good start!

I'm the same way. I can't give anything away with our name on it! Those are great books!!
ReplyDeleteMy most favorite part of buying books from garage sales or goodwill is seeing the notes, I am with you however that I would NEVER give away a book with a personal note to me in there. Makes me sad when people give away personal treasures.
ReplyDeleteGreat finds!

I always look for inscriptions when searching for old books. Last weekend I found one not only with the to/from inscription, but several birthday cards from that same date. The book about poetry did not look as though it had been read much. All the cards and the book were from the thirties! I also look for ones with unusual titles.

No, I couldn't leave them either, especially with the sentimental inscriptions.
ReplyDeleteI am really sentimental about books anyway but if there is an inscription inside to me, well that seals it: I can't give it away. I love that you've shared those inscriptions ... the person giving those books obviously did so with such warmth and love.
ReplyDeleteWell you and I have something in common because I'm a sucker for old books too. Like you, I love the age, size, color and artwork of a book and will buy it for those reasons even if I never plan to read it. Your collection is pretty.
